The Button-Down Blasphemy of Mike Huckabee
Forget Reagan. Mike Huckabee obviously wants to bring us back to the Bob Newhart administration:

I know Gov Huckabee means well. I'm just not comfortable with humour that treats the infinite, almighty God trivially. 'Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain'
Caleb Rackliffe | December 1, 2007, 3:25am | #
Yeah, it is not biblical at all to do something like that. "Taking the Lord's name in vain" doesn't mean swearing in most cases; it means this type of crap.

I actually think that this is funny.
However, if I had ever said it, me being an atheist, it would probably come off much like me, being a white guy, calling a black person the N-word. My point is, no one who's not actually a believer could actually get away with this in the middle of a political event.

Hey Mike -- God called back for you: he said you suck!
Rotter | December 1, 2007, 10:07am | #
This kind of superficial trivial banter is what passes for religion in the US. That's why "faith" is so popular - it's turned into theo-tainment. That an actual minister could do a painful routine like this, thinking it delivers a serious message, proves that religion is totally spent as anything but a folk superstition.
Sassy | December 1, 2007, 10:17am | #
Hey, I just bet the ones that send in any negative comments are Demos!! If you all are so gun ho fired up about his little introduction, why haven't you written to SNL, all the talk shows, at least one or more have done little skits like this. God does have a humorous side. And you know what, let's just say this was wrong, God has forgiven him, why can't you all? I know, I know, you all are DAMNORATS!
halfdoghalfdeer | December 1, 2007, 10:21am | #
Why are you all assuming that it wasn't really God on the phone?
dpotts | December 1, 2007, 10:55am | #
The joke doesn't bother me half as much as the arrogant "God is a Republican" sort of attitude. Huckabee has a sense of humor, sure, but like most of the religious right, he's also an arrogant SOB whose politics happens to be more about power and control than any real moral virtue.

This guy is an epic disaster. KEEP YOUR JESUS OUT OF THE WHITEHOUSE.

Sassy,
Why would you assume that anyone who doesn't like this is a democrat? Is it because you believe all democrats hate Christianity?
Lot's a democrats ARE, in fact, Christians. They're simply use their faith to justify a big government, social-justice agenda rather than a big government, socially-repressive one.
Lots of independents (like me) are also Christians. We simply don't like the idea of folks claiming to speak for Jesus setting public policy for everyone else. On many Christian issues I tend to disagree with a lot of other Christians - especially hard, right-wing intolerants as well as hard, lefties.
As for this issue in particular, while it was somewhat clever, it just wasn't very funny.
So Sassy...you're a dumb-assy.
Karen | December 1, 2007, 7:33pm | #
Thing is, Sassy, if SNL or The Daily Show did this, it would have been funny. This wasn't. The fact that Huckabee didn't get zapped by a bolt of lightning right there on stage is proof that God is far more forgiving than most of His followers.
John C. Randolph | December 1, 2007, 8:43pm | #
Well, I kept hearing how this guy's supposed to be funny. If this is typical, then Huckabee shouldn't give up his day job.

I don't know, John...I'll give him credit for carrying the bit better than most any other politician could. As far as right-wingers go, Huckabee's far less sanctimonious and far nicer than most any other conservative...unfortunately his fiscal chops are lousy. When The Club For Growth gives you a D-, well..all I got to say is the last thing we need is a(nother?) big spending social conservative.
B-rad | December 1, 2007, 11:20pm | #
Huckabee definitely proved that he is a much better actor than Fred "yawn" Thompson...
Dsbooley | December 2, 2007, 12:00am | #
Right now Huckabee is filling a giant void in the Republican party as far as candidates are concerned: up until his recent surge, it seemed as there was no one person to perfectly match the neocon, big-spending, uber-religious, Leviathan model of governance that is the hallmark of the Bush presidency.
Now this very sizable part of the GOP is rushing toward him as he is seen as a logical successor to Bush. This is scary - Huckabee is Bush on steroids, and if he secures the nomination, will present himself as a quite formidable candidate against any of the Dems. With continued fecklessness in Congress and with a judiciary that is calibrated to support further encroachments on liberty, he will not only continue to lead this nation down it's present path, he will put his foot on the gas pedal. In short, this guy gives Bill Kristol wet dreams.
madpad | December 2, 2007, 2:14am | #
Hmmm, Dsbooley...interesting. I didn't have him pegged quite so neocon-ish. I had him figured as more of an openly evangelical progressive.
Truth be told, though, Ron Paul is the only republican candidate who doesn't completely scare the piss out of me...not that the dems are fronting anybody better.
Larry Edelstein | December 2, 2007, 8:15am | #
Huckabee doesn't seem like he's as much of an...asshole...as Bush always did.

This reminds me of the Dutch comedian Fons Jansen who did a routine where he had god on the phone. This is waaaaaaaay back when, but Jansen (of course) was much wittier, ending the conversation saying (in a worried voice) "what do you mean, 'see you soon'?" If the Jansen thing hadn't been so obscure and in a foreign language I would've thought he ripped off the idea.
