Matt Welch Talking About John McCain on CNN

Earlier this week, reason magazine Editor-in-Chief Matt Welch talked with CNN about presidential candidate Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), his role in the Keating Five scandal, and the muddy roots of campaign-finance reform legislation.

Watch Welch and then buy his book, McCain: The Myth of a Maverick.

Oh for pity's sake, a politician's motives weren't pure? His motives weren't PURE?

Shocked, I am! Yes, shocked that politicians claim to be idealistic when, in reality, their actions are driven by cold calculation! I've never heard of such behavior in Washington before!

All politicans are rational animals and will do what needs to be done for their own political survival. Ordinarily, I would be charitable and assume that there was more to Welch's analysis than that sound bite.... But Welch has some sort of sick obsession with McCain, and it seems more likely to me that Welch is just reaching for any rhetorical cudgel he can find.

I actually was planning on reading the book, but the more hysterical Welch becomes, I'm starting to reconsider. I do so hate wasting my time listening to someone else vent his spleen.
